A hard shell hyperbaric chamber is a rigid steel or stainless-steel pressure vessel sealed to deliver hyperbaric oxygen therapy at 2.0 ATA or higher — roughly twice the pressure you feel at sea level. That pressure is what drives oxygen into blood plasma deep enough to reach bone, wounds, and poorly perfused tissue. Soft-sided "mild" chambers stop at 1.3–1.5 ATA and simply cannot reach that therapeutic depth.

The budget "soft bag" assumption is dangerous. The Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society documents a young man in North Carolina who died of asphyxia in an unattended soft-sided "Mild Hyperbaric Chamber," a 2024 chamber rupture in India, and notes that Health Canada has banned unauthorized soft-shell chambers outright. Most fabric chambers are not FDA-registered and do not comply with NFPA 99 or ASME PVHO-1.

The honest version is blunt: a soft bag is not a cheaper hard chamber, it is a different and largely uncertified device.
